History

The Calgary Booster Club hosts its 56th Sportsman of the Year Dinner this year, and celebrates a long and proud tradition of athletic involvement in Calgary. The founders of the club held their first informal meeting at the Club Cafe in downtown Calgary in 1951. Perhaps the greatest contribution occurred in 1979 when the club acted as the catalyst for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games bid.

Recognition of Calgary's Outstanding Sportsmen

The Calgary Booster Club realizes the significant importance of Calgary sporting people

Recognize annually, the Calgary Sportsman of the Year
Recognize athletic leaders and sport builders in the City of Calgary.
Recognize, with the Calgary Sports Media Club, the City's Female Athlete of the Year,
who receives the Henry Viney Award. This award is named in honour of Henry Viney, the
long-time sports writer of CFCN Radio-Television who passed away in 1980.
Recognize, with the Calgary Sports Media Club, the City's Male Athlete of the Year, who
receives the Scott-Mamini Trophy. This award is named in honour of Harry Scott, Sports
Editor at the Calgary Albertan and Bob Mamini, the Sports Department Head of the
Calgary Herald. Both were highly respected across the country, especially during the
1930’s and 1940’s.
Recognize, in partnership with the City of Calgary, athletes' achievements in national
and international competitions.

Co-Sponsorship with the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association

The Calgary Booster Club is a long time support of High School athletics:

In the 2008-2009 year we are awarding 22 $1000 and 15 $500 for a total of $29,500.
Host annual tip-off tournaments in volleyball and basketball and the swimming and diving meet.
Co-sponsored the Higher Hoops (basketball) and the Clearwater Cup (rugby).

Sponsorship of Post-Secondary Grants

$4000 scholarship/grants to each of the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and SAIT Polytechnic.

Endowment Funds

Each year the Calgary Booster Club selects athletes for endowments or scholarships to pursue excellence in sport through the Art Smith Sports Legacy Fund and Alberta Lotteries. In the 2008-2009 year we are awarding 28 endowments of $1000 each.

Each spring, the Calgary Booster Club holds the annual Sportsman of the Year Dinner.

This year’s Calgary Sportsman of the Year Dinner will be held at the Red & White Club on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.

Annually the dinner attracts 700+ corporate Calgarians and sport supporters wishing well Calgary Sportsman of the Year, Honoured Athletic Leaders, and the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for Calgary as selected by the Calgary Sport Media.
