About Father Whelihan

Father Whelihan, a Basilian priest, taught and coached for 35 years at St. Mary’s High School. His teams dominated football and track and field, repeatedly winning city and provincial championships.

He was the third recipient of the Calgary Booster Club’s Sportsperson of the Year Award (1956), received the Order of Canada (1985) and inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame (1985).

About the Award

The scholarship was established in 1972 by three former students of Father Whelihan with the intention to benefit graduating male high school students selected one each from Calgary Separate and Calgary Public School Districts.

The criteria for selection are students who demonstrate outstanding athletic ability and achievement, qualities of good citizenship and scholastic achievement, with consideration given to financial need.

The scholarship is to be used for post-secondary education. In 2001, the Calgary Booster Club partnered with the Father Whelihan Memorial Scholarship committee to provide an annual grant to the scholarships and endowment fund. Beginning in 2015/16, female high school students were also included as recipients of this award.
