Sarah McCarthy has been actively involved with Special Olympics Calgary since 2001. She competes in the sport of cross country skiing in the winter months, and athletics, badminton, swimming and powerlifting in the spring and summer.
Sarah has an impressive sport record and has already competed at two Special Olympics World games, nine National, nine Provincial, and two Western Canada Summer Games. From these games, Sarah, has proudly stood on the podium many times, winning 18 Gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Most recently she was selected to Team Canada for the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games, where she will compete in the sport of cross country skiing. These games will take place in Austria from March 14th to 25th.
Sarah is committed to her training and is consistently improving in all her sports. She is a gentle, courteous and respectful person and is always first to cheer on her fellow athletes.
Outside of her sports, Sarah is a swim instructor at one of Calgary’s YMCA’s.
Since joining Special Olympics, she has become a more confident person and it has helped her overcome her shyness. Her hard work and never give up attitude, and her willingness to learn is what makes her a great leader and a role model to other Special Olympics athletes.
Sarah is looking forward to attending the games in Austria and we know that she will represent, both Calgary and Canada well.
